Ahhh...your playlist has some of my favorites that I don't hear people talking about often enough. Mercury and Heirloom, for example. Thank you for writing this lovely post <3
i have tickets to see his show on broadway next week. i have no idea if it will be good, disappointing, something else altogether, but i listened to that album obsessively at a pivotal time in my life and i just need to be immersed in it again.
No way!! I'm jealous, honestly. I know he kinda wanted nothing to do with the production but I've still heard good things about it. Really, I don't know how I'd receive it as someone who also obsessed over Illinois at one point but I hope it's at the very least entertaining and best deeply cathartic for you!
I cannot tell you how happy I was to see this in my inbox. The combo of your writing and Sufjan is amazing. My first Sufjan album was Age of Adz and I always was curious about Futile Devices as the opener but never sat down to put my feelings towards it into words. The way you discuss it in relation to the whole gives voice to my curiosity. Looking forward to more!
Well I absolutely loved this, James. I’m a very basic Sufjan fan, Illinois is the only album of his that I’ve gone out of my way to listen to multiple times. But Casimir Pulaski Day makes me ugly cry anytime that I hear it.
I’ve always had to temper my love for artists that I admire, and tried to settle for a North Star guidance like you describe. I just have a bunch of jumbled thoughts, and I just want to say that this was great and I can’t wait to read more of your work.
